MalawiNewest Review: ... In the north there is Nyika Plateau, which I will tell you more about just now. Malawi, with a population of almost 14 million, is an extremely poor third world country. It relies heavily on international aid to help it's economy and people. However, it is known as 'The Warm Heart of Africa' for a reason. The people, many whom have very little, are so friendly and welcoming. They always have a smile that makes you realise there is more to life than possessions. Recently Malawi has had much media interest, due to Madonna adopting two children. This has caused many discussions and arguments for and against what she has done. It has also b... more |

I have been extremely fortunate to have lived in Malawi for twelve years. I was based in Lilongwe and visited many wonderful places over the years. Malawi, also known as 'The Warm Heart Of Africa', is a landlocked country, surrounded by Mozambique, Zambia and Tanzania, in the Southern Hemisphere. It is considered as part of Southern Africa (not South Africa). The national language is Chichewa, although there are many tribal dialects around the country. The local currency is Kwacha and Tambala's. Historically, Malawi gained independence from British colonial rule in 1964. It was then known as Nyasaland. President Hastings Banda ruled the country, ... Read the complete review

Africa for beginner or the warm heart of Africa that are the slogans with which Malawi tries to attract visitors . Both slogans are at least a bit true but it is not as easy to travel as the slogan want’s you to believe. But for now lets start with the facts. Malawi is a relative small country in the south eastern region if Africa that is landlocked by Mozambique, Zambia and Tanzania. Main target for travellers in Malawi is the lake with the same name (Lake Malawi) which is host for 80% of the aquarium fishes. At least Lonely Planet says so. The people of Malawi are for sure one of the friendliest I ever met. Even if everybody tries to make ... Read the complete review

In October 2001, I fell in love. Not with one man, but with a few millions of them, plus an equal number of women, loads of kids and even more fish, birds, butterflies, grasses, flowers, trees, bushes, rivers, hills, villages and towns and one lake (well at least there I get back to being monogamous). It's not for nothing that Malawi calls itself 'The warm heart of Africa' - it is an extraordinarily friendly, warm-hearted country indeed. The one opinion I planned on writing has grown far too long and turned into a series. I will try and find a way to publish all of them here... The hard facts: 1. Geography and bits Malawi is ... My trip to Malawi provided me with everlasting memories, fantastic photographs and unbelievable stories. Last summer, I went to Malawi on a British schools expedition. It was an experience i will never forget. Our expedition group flew from Johanasburg airport which is just like Heathrow to Blantyre (the southern capital of Africa). Blantyre airport is not really an airport, more a runway with a shack. Major culture shock! From this point on our 5 weeks were full of awesome sights, sounds, smells and tastes. We (50 people) travelled in an open top lorry along a pot-holed dirt track at about 70mph. Slighty scary. This was the main road into Blantyre. The ... Read the complete review
