Less than 30 minutes from central Copenhagen, but much cheaper (Malmo)

Advantages: Small enough to see on foot, less than 30 minutes from Copenhagen Disadvantages: none
Malmö is one of Scandinavia's hidden treasures. But now that there's a car and rail bridge between Malmö and Copenhagen more people who travel to Copenhagen should try to stay in Malmö and only make day trips to the Danish capital as Malmö is much cheaper to stay in, and houses a few treasures of its own. There's the Malmöhus castle with its museums, a countless number of beautiful parks, numerous great restaurants and especially in summer a great nightlife around Lilla Torg. The shopping at Hansacompagniet (a bit up market and designer goods) and Triangeln is quite good, and you can get yourself a good bargain with the current exchange rate. Restaurants to recommend include Louisiana, Översten, Casa Mia and anything in "Saluhallen". If you have some more time and want to venture outside the city you can visit Lund with its University (from the 17th century) and cathedral, or go south to the wonderful beaches and picturesque towns of Höllviken, Skanör and Falsterbo. If you feel homesick there's a genuine English pub in Höllviken (very busy on weekends and in the summer - great atmosphere), or if you're looking for the quaint - try going to the goose crossing in Skanör. As for the trip to Copenhagen - well, if you've still got time left after exploring Malmö there are several trains every hour from Malmö central station to Copenhagen airport and central. Summary: |
