Advantages: For all of the family

Disadvantages: Heat at height of season

Malta is a beautiful Island with lots to do whether you are after sun, culture or to dance the night away.

The only thing I would advise against is the time of year to go. I was there in August and it was extreme - if you like it go for it. Otherwise go on either side of the hottest season. Beware the winter months as I am told it gets pretty cold.

The Island itself is only about 26 miles by 15 so it does not take long to get around. What makes it appear it to take a while is the quality of the roads - there are more holes than tar macadam.

Shopping is another weakness. It is definitely not a shoppers paradise. Most shops have a lot of space, but little in the way of merchandise to show.

Watch the history of the island. The Island is steeped in warfare and religious developments. The shows outlining the history of the Island are great - the best ones being in Valletta. There are plenty of displays on the early history, the arrival of the knights and the war with Germany. For those who like churches this Island is awash with beautiful churches and cathedrals. Each beautifully maintained and decorated.

The silent city of Mdina has a wonderful view of the surrounding countryside, and to top it off, go for a slice of locally made gateaux at the cafe. Brilliant.

The locals have a siesta mid-afternoon and then sit out in the cool of the evening at the pavement cafes. It is a lovely family atmosphere.

If you can manage it go to a village festival. Each one has one to celebrate its saint. Bands, fireworks and a great atmosphere.

If you want to just relax then you can hit the beach at St. Pauls bay or cross over to the Blue Lagoon on Comino. A trip on a ferry or small boat is fun.

All in all, a family island with lots to do.
