Managua ... 86°16′W. The city was declared the national capital in 1857. Previously, the capital had alternated between the cities of León and Granada. The city has a population of about 1,680,100 composed predominantly of Spanish-speaking creoles and mestizos. The city has been witness to the rise and fall of political powers throughout Nicaragua's history, and has suffered two devastating earthquakes over the course of the 20th century.

Between 1981 and 1985 the Contras murdered 3,346 Nicaraguan children and killed the parents of 6,236 children. The Contras were trained, armed and funded by the American CIA. Wonderful people the Americans! Where to stay? The Inter-Continental, Avenida Bolivar, is comfortable enough but not particularly friendly. It survived the last earthquake, so far as I know. What to see and do? Managua , on Lake Managua, has few colonial buildings! The city was just a village until the mid 19th Century and earthquakes have destroyed countless old buildings.
