Last week I have been in Manuas on the business trip. Not the first place that comes to mind when you say Brazil. All my friends were asking about Copacabana, Rio, Sao Paulo, Maracana... I had to disappoint them and say that I haven't enjoyed those attractions (if I exclude 2 hours wait to check in on the next flight at the Sao Paulo airport). I have to say that I was not so happy knowing that I'll go in the middle of Amazon rainforest, that will spend almost 24h on the way there, that will take quite a few jabs and antimalaria tabs and then spend just a less than a week there without much free time. Manaus is the gateway to the Amazon. It is in Northern Brazil on the banks of the Rio Negro (The Black River) and not far from its confluence with the Amazon River and the Amazon rain forest. Most tourists wanting to explore the Brazilian Amazon head for Manaus. Getting there We flew from Sao Paulo to Manaus stopping briefly at Brasilia airport. The total flying time was about four hours. Brazil is a huge country and Manaus is a long way from Rio de Janeiro and Sao Paulo, so the only easy way for a tourist to get there is to fly from one of the major cities in Brazil. Jumping off the back of the truck that had delivered me deep into the Amazonian heartland, I was instantly greeted by the intense heat and a sharp painful sting to my right deltoid. For umpteenth time I swatted another dreaded mossie, leaving a fresh red streak, staining my moist tanned skin. To locals, the mosquitoes are the true state bird and not the beautiful toucan.
