The people on the streets, hawkers and shopkeepers were very excited and very happy to see foreign tourists. Obviously, they assumed that we had lots of money. Well, it actually felt that we did, considering how cheap things were. We did not let this opportunity slip and headed for the best restaurants and hotels in town. Food was incredibly cheap considering that you could have a beef steak at about Rs.80 (about £1)in a 4-star hotel. A few years back , I visited India and spent 2 weeks in Mangalore City. It was an experience which I will cherish for a long time to come. I flew in via a domestic flight from Madras to Mangalore airport which cost me about Rs. 1500(approximately 17 pounds). My first memorable experience was getting into a cab to go to Mangalore City which is about an hour's drive. The cab had to be pushed before it could start and the driver was away as happy as can be. What was most interesting was when we stopped at a junction and the engine died. The cab driver then, did something very incredible.
