I spent last summer working in Porto Mantovano, just 15 minutes drive from Mantova itself, and visited the town on numerous occasions. It's a great place and very 'Italian' - more so than Milan or Verona which are very touristy nowadays. Mantova boasts a fabulous palace with interiors which could rival many of the more well know ones. In deed, some of the tapestries in one of the rooms were, in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, loaned to Vienna's Schonnbrunn on request of the reigning Emperor there.
