MaputoNewest Review: ... the newly opened Holiday Inn. A new hotel is soon to be built called Hotel Maputo. Hotel Maputo is one of a string of new buildings going up in a new business district in South Maputo. The Palana Hotel is 5* and renound for its luxury although comes with a hefty price tag. The Rivuma Carlton and Avenida are both 4* but the Avenida boasts a better location (close to the best restaurants) and better rooms. I found the best hotel to be the Holiday Inn. The Holiday Inn is situated on the coast and houses a restaurant, bar, large swimming pool, gym and some small shops. The Hotel was only opened in June 2001 so all the furnishing is bra... more |

Maputo is located on the Southern most tip of the vast country that is Mozambique. Maputo was once home to one of the largest ports in Africa but after gaining independance from Portugal in 1975 it went into a civil war that continued up until the mid 1990s. This put the whole country into economical ruin and 20 million people relying on foreign aid. Since then the country has begun to recover. The port is in its final steps to becoming private. Once the port is privatised it will be run by a British, Swedish and Portuguese company and will bring vasts amount of foreign money into the country.
