MarseilleNewest Review: ... new cathedral. Half way down on the Quai Rive Neuve is 'Le Criee', the National theatre and Marseilles most famous theatre. Named after the old fish auction rooms where the theatre is now situated. I have visited the theatre a few times and always found the experience very enjoyable if a bit pretentious at times. My favourite shows were always cabaret as they were usually so kitch. I am ... more |

Looking back at my reviews I have realised that I have only written one review about France. Before I moved to Poland two years ago I spent two years living and working in France. As usual I didn't stay put in one place. I lived in three regions of France; Midi Pyrenees, Dordogne and Provence/Cote D'Azur - all very interesting and beautiful in their own ways. However, I do have one favourite region - Provence/Cote D'Azur and one favourite city - Marseille. A lot of people seem to worry unduly when they are making a trip to Marseille. In fact I have had a phone call this week from a friend worried sick because his parents are going on their own for a vacation. ... Read the complete review

Marseille is a dirty, smelly city. You can't argue with that. There is graffiti everywhere and the place looks really run down. Almost no matter what town you live in and what you think of it, Marseille will have you returning to it, feeling proud of your clean-looking city. On the way in from the airport on the bus you see graffiti everywhere and some really dilapidated buildings with washing hanging out of windows. You arrive in the city centre to realise it's just the same there. Only small parts of the Vieux Port and La Canabiere look relatively clean. It's hugely busy and noisy on the main streets too and drivers don't care much for pedestrian ... Read the complete review

It shares a mediteranian climate of hot, humid and dry, the coldest months are January and february (11 degrees C) Marseille is of great importance to france, - look at the french national anthem - la marseille. "Ladies and Gentlemen, in a few minutes the train will stop at Marseille. Keep a close eye on your luggage in case of thieves." It was noticeable that this warning had not been considered necessary at Lille, Lyon or any of the other places we had stopped on our way down through France. We kept a close eye on our luggage, but no local rascals attempted to abscond with it, and we went safely on to Nice, where again no warning against theft was apparently needed. That was several years ago, the first time we passed through Marseille on the TGV, and naturally it whetted our appetite to return for a proper visit. Admittedly, the city does not ... I went to stay for one week in July with a friend who lives & works in Marseilles. I caught the Euro Star from London Waterloo at 8am in the morning. Being London, the weather was warm as it usually is for England, but I then had no idea for what I was in for! If you have never done the channel tunnel before, it can be a bit daunting. There are lots of tickets in a blue book to look after. There are the usual check up's where you have to take all your bags off to be inspected, then there are all the escalators & finding the right platform. The guards (if you can find them) usually try to help. On the actual train itself, which has automatic doors, and ... Read the complete review

Cartagena is a wonderful place to hold a drug summit; The palm trees on the beach and the coconut cocktails put many of colonial Cartagena's rivals in the shade.
