You can't visit Martinique without seeing the Saint Pierre volcano and spending a few hours in the museums surrounding in it. Although the volcano in Montserrat is better. If you are a keen diver you simply must go diving off the coast of Saint Pierre. There are approx. 50 shipwrecks which sunk when the volcano erupted in 1902. ... more |

Having travelled around most of the Carribean, Martinique came as a surprise. A pleasant surprise. It is much more developed (it has amotorway - yipee) than its neighbouring islands and boasts some rather nice little boutiques (my wife loved them). Rue Victor Hugo is packed with the best shops. Fort de France is just like a mini Paris (suburb). The cuisine is divine. Having dined off KFC for two months in Antigua I was in heaven when I found a lovely little delicatessen called Lina's. They do a lovely fruit salad too. I was astounded at the sheer number of French people from France there. Most of the restaurants were run by them, and run very well. ... Read the complete review

I was so angry about this. I mean, what a nightmare. The university French department sends all your mates to Paris for the winter and you end up missing out on all the snow and coffee and those nice warm friendly Parisians and being forced to spend six months in Martinique instead......teaching English to 16 year old Martinican girls.....for up to eight hours a week. No, but seriously, it was tough. You'd have hated it. I had a downstairs flat in the headmaster's house in Riviere-Pilote, overlooking the bay with St.Lucia on the horizon and a hammock in the garden.
