Advantages: Convenient gateway into West Africa
Disadvantages: No drinking, loads of corruption
So you have managed to find one of the most remote countries in west africa and you want the honest truth. Mauritania is hot and prone to extensive dust storms, but to counter this it has some of the most beautiful desert you can find. On the Nouakchott beach you find orange sand falling into the blue cool atlantic ocean. Yes this place is beautiful but beware alcholol is out, this is a strict islamic country with prison sentences for alcohol offences but with corruption so rife then you can generally buy your way out of trouble. If you get desperate for a beer then try the Congolese embassy, if you speak to the guard then if he likes you he may direct you to the private drinking den around the back. Opinion is a stunning beautiful country with corruption everywhere, but remember this is strictly arab africa, get over the border to Senegal and life really parties.

- 08/07/01 I thought that the capital city (who's name I forget now, six years on) was the most depressing place I have been to in my life. It is a dry, barren and exhausted place. |
