Mendoza is a city in central Argentina and popular destination for tourists doing wine tours. The city was recreated after an earthquake in 1861 and is a spacious town of wide streets and open plazas. As a result it is pleasant to wander around but sometimes lacks character and can be a little over-kept and Stepford-wife perfect in appearance. Having just read the previous review of Mendoza you'd be led to believe the only real reason to visit would be its location close to the Andes.....wrong!!! The location is pretty fantastic, Mendoza is located in the north of Argentina close to the Andes, its a fantastic place to go for adventure sports such as hang gliding and more especially white water rafting, you can use the city as a base to visit the Andes and I did this climbing the Andes by bus until we briefly entered Chile. The main reason I would recommend Mendoza is the wine, this place has some amazing wine tours and vineyards, the Malbec produced is outstanding as are Merlot's, ... Read the complete review

The chief reason anyone should wish to visit Mendoza (as a tourist at least) would be to visit the Andies. The city itself is well ordered by Latin American standards even though there is evidence of high crime there (all the windows have bars across them for security). The street plan is highly logical and resembles the typical Latin grid pattern. The people are warm and curious about all outsiders (particularly the British who they call the English like the yanks.) Argentinians sometimes call us the Pirates, but never to our faces.
