Merida is in the northeast of the Yucatan peninsula, and is the best base for visiting the Uxmal Ruins, one of the important ruins of the Mayan Kingdom. Merida itself is a pretty town offering a glimpse into the real Mexico, with taco stands and ice cream sellers in the main square, overlooked by the cathedral in the spanish colonial style. A In the North of the town you have the opportunity to glance into one of the mysteries of the Yucatan peninsula by visiting a Cenote. Merida is commonly known as the White City due to the fact that most of the builidings in town seem to be white. That, added to the dazzling sunshine most of the year, make this one of the "brightest" places on Earth I guess! Anyway, I have been to Merida a few times and it seems to truly be the place time forgot. It is actually more of a large town than it is a city and they seem to be about 20 years behind on everything - up until very recently the cinema only opened once a week (sunday evenings) and the whole town would go to see whatever was on!
