Advantages: just got back a week ago

Disadvantages: learn some spanish

Merida is in the northeast of the Yucatan peninsula, and is the best base for visiting the Uxmal Ruins, one of the important ruins of the Mayan Kingdom. Merida itself is a pretty town offering a glimpse into the real Mexico, with taco stands and ice cream sellers in the main square, overlooked by the cathedral in the spanish colonial style.
A
In the North of the town you have the opportunity to glance into one of the mysteries of the Yucatan peninsula by visiting a Cenote. A Cenote is a geographical sinkhole ( simlar to a very large natural well ), and you can have the opportunity to swim in this one, although the water is generally freezing as it is fed from an underground river. The opportunity to swim in amongst the stalactites is unique to Central America, and if you fancy a swim then should not be missed.
Overall Merida is on the temple route, offering a glimpse into the Mexico that time forgot, so grab a taco and a cerveza and just sit back and enjoy.

Summary: an up to date glimpse into the real mexico
