Ever since I got back from Mexico, and started answering questions about where I went on holiday, it is clear that the words Mexico and Cancun mean the same thing to most of the UK population. It is like the rest of the world judging Great Britain by David Beckham - good at one thing only.
The scope of Mexico is huge - much bigger than one country is expected to have. There are a huge number of integral cultures, all fiercely expressed by their owners. Each town is different and you do not see the sort of global leveling that seems to happen in European cities.
Mexico city is humungous - 20 000 000 people. Most of them trying to drive on the roads simutaneously at the weekend. There is nowhere quite like this town with its eclectic mixture of European style architecture with a strong Spanish influence, its monuments to revolution and reform, The unique anthropology museum and loads of excellent restaurants. We were fortunate, and had no safety or hassle problems.
One good thing is that mexican street traders take no for an answer.

For an extra special treat, have your shoes shined at Mexico City Airport (20 pesos)

Oaxaca (pronounced Wah ha ca) is a great old fashioned town with a brilliant market, and a culture of chocolate.

Merida is the capital of the Yucutan, and is built on the cement and bread baking industry.
Lots of music.
I loved the town Zocala's - the town squares which were true centres of activity.
At the one in Mexico City, you can watch the local stoning the presidential police in a half-hearted manner.

Cancun is nothing to do with mexico. It is an American styled international resort. YOu could be anywhere in the world. You could spend a year there and never eat mexican food. However it does have a nice coast, and the weather can be good

Some years ago I was in Mexico for two weeks, but not in Cancun. We flew to Yucatan and then went by bus north to Mexico City. There is much to see indeed and I certainly wouldn't travel to a country so far away from home only to lie on a beach, I can do that in Europe for less money.
