Advantages: Hectic and modern

Disadvantages: Lacks significant monuments

Milan is the most active city in Italy from an economic point of view.

Although the real capital is Rome, all the major institutions, corporations and banks are based in Mialn.

Milan is also a very expensive city to visit and has less attractions than Rome, Florence, or Tuscany. It is thought that flying into Milan is the best way to snap up good deals on clothes, this is true only in part since Milan is a god place to buy designer clothes, but these remain expensive also there.

For cheaper clothes, there are better places in Italy, as a thumb of rule, the smaller the city, the more the chances of finding some real bargains at the local market.

You can have sublime food in Milan, but again, it is expensive. A good way of having a decent meal around £10 is to go to places like "Brek" or "Ciao". These are just some of the chains offering good food on a self service basis.

If you are close to the Dome square, you can ask for the bakery of Luini. This is a very well known place where you can have "panzerotti" for 2.20 Euros. These are pancakes filled with different kind of stuff, mozzarella, spinaches, ham, whatever. A couple of these will get you going for the day, although on a hot summer day they may prove a bit "weighting down" on you.

If you fly to Milan, try to land at linate, since the other airport, Malpensa is well out of the city, in the middle of a natural park. There is a train going to Milan for few Euros. It takes around 40 minutes for the trip.

Overall, I would visit Florence and Rome before going to Milan, since for tourists these cities offer more things to see and more monuments.
