Advantages: Unspoilt; Beautiful countryside

Disadvantages: Becoming more and more tourist oriented by the day

I visited Mojacar several years ago, and after seeing the report on 'Holidays on a Shoestring' on BBC the other night, I felt something must be said about this rural Spanish town. Mojacar itself is a small town situated on top of a hill, half a mile from the coast, on the Costa de Almeria, to the east of the Costa del Sol. When I visited, this area was truly unspoilt. There were only a hand full of hotels, none of which were high rise. The beaches were clean, and the roads empty. The airport in Almeria didn't even have a terminal building! You got off the plane, walked around the side of what is now the terminal building, and pulled your suitcases off the back of a trailer towed by a tractor!

We hired a car for a few days, to visit the surrounding countryside and the historic town of Granada, home to the Alhambra Palace. We asked the man from the rental company where the petrol station was. A simple question we thought. The reply was that it was 12 miles away in the next town.

Mojacar itself was so small and unspoilt that the roads in the town itslef were to small for cars to even enter! From what I saw in the Holiday program, however, was that things have since changed, and the small town has become yet another victim of the foreign tourist.

In my opinion, it is not too late. This is still as far as I know when of the most unspoilt regions of Spain that is easily accessible from Britain. Go now, before the tourists spoil the resort forever.

about five years ago we were meant to go to Mojacar to a beautiful villa high up in the mountains. Whilst on another holiday we decided to find the villa for when we got there, we wanted to see it before we went. Even though it was a beautiful enormous villa , we thought it wouldn't be ideal for us as we would have to drive everywhere . My husband didn't fancy doing this as he wouldn't have been able to have a drink. The drive to the villa was up a very very steep driveway.
Maybe we will go when we get older and are not so bothered about going out.

Brr, I hate touristy places! Still have nightmares of holiday in Benidorm! ;-)

A bit more info (places to go, history etc.) wouldn't hurt though...

You don't have to write as much as I did in my Op about Basel though (*Hint, hint*)
