Mount Kilimanjaro

Description: Kilimanjaro, formerly Kaiser-Wilhelm-Spitze, is a mountain in north-eastern Tanzania. Kilimanjaro is the tallest ... more
Mount Kilimanjaro ... free-standing mountain rise in the world, rising 4600 metres (15,000 ft) from the base, and includes the highest peak in Africa at 5,895 metres (19,340 ft), providing the dramatic view from the surrounding plains. Kilimanjaro is a giant stratovolcano, not currently active, with fumaroles that emit gas in the crater on the main summit of Kibo. Scientists concluded in 2003 that molten magma is just 400 metres below the summit crater. Although new activity is not expected, there are fears the volcano may collapse, causing a major eruption similar to the 1980 eruption of Mount St. Helens. Several collapses and landslides have occurred on Kibo in the past, one creating the area known as the western breach. Although there is no recorded history of eruptions, local legend speaks of activity around 170 years ago.

Rating:

In January this year we reached the top of Mount Kilimanjaro on the Marangu route, the easiest way up the 19,344 foot mountain. For us it was quite an achievement, but if you're fit and adventurous, you should make it. The views from the top and the sense of achievement are well worth it! We took a package trip with Hayes and Jarvis, flying on KLM via Amsterdam to Kilimanjaro International Airport. This is our experience… DAY 1. There was a short briefing session in the hotel, then we quickly packed our kitbag out of which we were to live for the next five days. An hour long journey by Land Rover took us to the National Park where we ...  Read the complete review
