Description: Munich (German: München) is the capital of the German Federal State of Bavaria (German: Freistaat Bayern). Munich is ... more
Munich ... Germany's third largest city and one of Europe's most prosperous. The city has a population of about 1.3 million (as of 2006) and the Munich metropolitan area is home to around 2.7 million people. It is located on the River Isar north of the Bavarian Alps. The city's motto was "Die Weltstadt mit Herz" (The world city with a heart) for a long time but has recently been replaced by "München mag dich" (Munich likes you). Its native name, München, literally means "Monks", and therefore, the figure on Munich's coat-of-arms is a monk, and is referred to as the Münchner Kindl, the child of Munich. Black and gold - the colors of the Holy Roman Empire - have been the city's official colors since the time of Louis IV, Holy Roman Emperor.

THE OLD CITY CENTRE: Munich’s skyline is dominated by the twin-towered, onion-topped, Frauenkirche, and this Cathedral’s predominance seems assured, thanks to recent state legislation that regulates & restricts the height of all surrounding buildings. The Frauenkirche is a beautifully conceived structure, boasting a ... more

‘In Munich Stands a Hofbräuhaus’…or so, roughly translated, runs one well-known staple of Munich’s beerhall sing-alongs. For many who’ve never visited this charming city (and perhaps, even for a few who have…) this, along with the even better-known Oktoberfest, an event which, to all intents and purposes, is little more than the Hofbräuhaus writ large, condensed into a month & transferred on to a circus ground, is pretty much all that Munich amounts to. Well, it isn’t. MY MUNICH: I lived in Munich for about four years, in the late-seventies and early eighties. My earliest memories of the Hofbräuhaus involve sitting outside it in a parked Mercedes with my ...  Read the complete review

FACT FILE • German name is München • The capital of Bavaria (Bayern), the south-east region of Germany • Franz Josef Strauss airport is approximately 40 mins from the center and has good public transport links • Main railway station (Hauptbahnhof / Hbf) has daily services within Germany and to neighbouring countries Whether you’re in the city for a day or a week, one of the best places to start is at Karlsplatz. This is the less interesting end of the pedestrianized zone, and walking along it takes you not only past most of the interesting shops, but also in the direction of some of ...  Read the complete review

The other day I was in Munich to see an art exhibition. I didn’t have any plans for the afternoon and when I saw a leaflet ‘Munich Walk Tours in English’, (from May 17th to August 31st daily 10:45 am and 3:00 pm, from Sept. 1st to Oct. 31st daily 10:45, meeting point in front of the town hall entrance under the Glockenspiel on Marienplatz, 9 Euro, under 26 years 8 Euro, children under 14 with an adult free), I thought, why not that? Why not find out what foreigners tell foreigners about Munich? Still on the Marienplatz the guide, a young woman from Australia, started with a survey over the history of Munich from the year it was officially ...  Read the complete review

I am english, lived here for 6 months, working for a software company. I must write as there are not many opinions. The only other german town I know well is Stuttgart. In Munich: 1. If you are foreign, you will feel happy to live here,as there are many foreign people. This is not true for other parts of Germany, as Germans tend to prefer other Germans. 2. The women are good looking, speak english and 'love a good time'. They are not the most sexy though, other cities are a bit better, but Munich girls are well-dressed. 3. The night life is not the best in Germany, as Stuttgart is better, but its fun and Alabamahalle (north ...  Read the complete review

Premium Review Munich: For the bewildered tourist (699 words)

If you are going on a holiday or short break to Munich and don’t know where to start, a good place is Munich tourist information. They provide information in English as well as German on pretty much anywhere you may wish to go in the area (both accommodation and sight-seeing information). If you go on their internet site and follow their links, however, be warned that some of the sites linked to (especially youth hostel sites), are not in English. Munich is a lively city but does not seem to have a great night life. There are however plenty of beer halls in the centre that open quite late. They do tend to get very busy though so get there early. The beer ...  Read the complete review
