Advantages: The Great Himalayan Views -
Disadvantages: The Erratic weather, not a disadvantage really -
Mussorrie , The gateway to the Garwahl Himalayas and a favourite summer holiday spot.......one feels rejuvenated and calmed by the rich green around,..
One of the oldest hill stations established by the Britishers, Mussoorie is very popular with tourists for its foggy hills and cool winds. It commands a breathtaking view of the extensive Himalayan snow ranges in the north-east and the Doon Valley in the south.
Mussoorie was discovered by an adventurous military officer, Captain Young, in 1827. It has everything one expects from a typical hill station - scintillating views of the valleys below, snow-capped mountains, a Mall, a skating rink and wonderful swirling mists..
HOW TO REACH MUSSORIE
By Air -
Indian Airlines has five flights a week from Delhi to the Jolly Grant Airport. Airport: Jolly Grant is the nearest functioning airport, at a distance of 59 km, from Mussorie and regular taxi services are available from there to the town.
By Train-
Dehra Dun is connected to most major cities in the north of India, with trains such as the Mussoorie Express, the Bombay Doon Express, Calcutta-Howrah-Doon Express and Gorakhpur-Doon Express. The Shatabdi Express leaves New Delhi every day except Thursdays, and it is the most convenient train to take if one is travelling from Delhi..
Railway station: Dehra Dun, 34 km away, serves as the railhead for Mussoorie.
By Road -
There are several buses from Delhi to this hill station, both private and state-run. From Dehra Dun to Mussoorie, one can hire cabs or take any of the buses , from just outside the Dehra Dun Railway Station. If travelling from Jammu, Saharanpur is the convenient place to take a bus directly to Mussoorie. The road from Delhi is well maintained and the 269 km journey can be completed in six hours, with a breathtaking view all through the journey....
PLACES OF INTEREST IN MUSSORIE
Gun Hill -
Gun Hill is the second highest point in Mussoorie and offers the best view of the valley below. The ropeway ride from the Mall to this hill (Rs 25) is sheer exhilaration. A bird's eye-view of Mussoorie town, Doon Valley and the Bunderpunch, Srikantha, Pithwara and Gangotri group of the Himalayas can be seen from here. One can also approach Gun Hill from a pathway, which forks off from the Mall Road near Kutchery. It takes about 20 - 30 minutes to reach the top.
The first time i went there, the entire range was completely covered by mist and thick dense fog, making visiblity near impossible, but magically after an hours wait, it began to clear and WOW!! what a view! it was well worth the wait....just as quickly it began to get cloudy and misty once again,
The best time to visit Mussorie is during summer months(March-May) and from October to December.
Kempty Falls -
On the Yamunotri Road, 18 km from Mussoorie town, Kempty Falls is one of the most frequented spots. It is a lovely picnic spot.
There is a Camp Himalayan Adventure activity , Kempty Fall, Mussoorie, Uttaranchal, which is situated 5 kms from Mussorie, if one is interested, it takes care of accomadation and food(vegetarian) and other activities and is definitely worth a try
The other places of interest....An ancient temple called Nag Devta(Snake God) Temple, about 7 kms from Mussorie , offering a lovely view of the Doon Valley. The temple has a very ancient idol of Snake god , and many ancient carvings.
Mussoorie Lake -
A newly developed picnic spot, situated on Mussoorie- Dehradun road and is about 6 kms from Mussoorie.
One can take a horse to the highest peak of Mussoorie near LAAL TIBBA. Only about 5 km from Mussoorie, you could even take a leisurely walk up to the top. The breath-taking view from up there is worth the climb.
Camel's Back Road -
Shaped like the back of a camel, this road stretches from Kulri Bazaar within the city of Mussoorie near the Rink Hall to Library Bazaar at Mussorie, A sretch of 3 km ....horse ride on this road, especially at sunset, is an experience in itself.
Shopping is interesting though nothing great at Mussorie, but ,the locally made handicrafts are good and well worth the price. The hand knitted cardigans ,semi precious stones and ornaments are good and are a craze among most tourists...There are items of wood carvings, the prices are affordable, if one has the patience to bargain ....
HOTELS AND GUEST HOUSES
1. Comfort Inn - in Mussorie @ $ 52 /- for a deluxe room
2.The Park Plaza Sylverton Mussorie at the Mall, Kuluri @ $160/-
3 The Ashoka Continental Hotel, at The Mall, Mussorie @ $ 200/-
There are many comfortable hotels and guest houses and the food is reasonable .....
The Rice Bowl restaurant situated in the heart of Mussoorie (overlooking Dominoe & Cafe coffee day) serves decent chinese, tibetan and thai food. The ambience is simple, the food delicious and the location is excellent. The rates are very reasonable and the serving is sumptious.
Mussoorie is a Great place to visit
Summary: A charming Hill Station -
