NaplesNewest Review: ... how dirty the streets were, this area in particular was strewn with all kinds of litter and there were piles of rubbish everywhere, one chap even using one a black bin bag full of trash as a pillow. I wasn't too bothered by this after all, I was only passing through and this wasn't my destination, I began looking for a cheap hotel that I'd found on the internet earlier, it looked good on ... more |

I can never quite bring myself to say Naples, being a football fan I've always wanted to call it Napoli and think that our British version makes it sound pretty horrible! Which of course to some extent, it actually is! Arriving at Naples train station in the evening, you'd be forgiven for thinking you were no longer in Italy, zombies abound this is the heart of the scruffy downtown area filled with beggars and odd balls, it makes the Bucuresti Nord train station look like a royal palace. The first thing notable to me was how dirty the streets were, this area in particular was strewn with all kinds of litter and there were piles of rubbish ... Read the complete review

At the beginning of April 2004 I spent 24 hours in Naples (on my way to Sardinia), I“d like to take you with me and show you what I saw. I stayed in a hotel in the historical centre, Hotel Sansevero in Piazza San Domenico Maggiore 9, 70 Euro for a single room (clean, quiet, nice modern furniture, small breakfast). The description on the net said, “easily reachable by underground (Metropolitana) Montesanto station or by bus direction Corso Umberto“. Ha!, says I, nonsense, nothing is easily reachable in Naples that isn“t situated directly beside an underground station. There are only two lines in the whole city and they do not cross the historical centre. If ... Read the complete review

This is just a quick one about Naples. I visited and spent 2 nights in Naples in August 2002. I found it to be a very unpleasant place. It was very hot and dusty. As the hotel that we were staying at did not offer meals, we ate out at restaurants. The owner of the first restaurant we ate at vas very arrogant and he was a rip off merchant. We ordered our meals and paid at least £8.00 each. I ordered a veal dish. When it came out, about 40 minutes later, the portion of meat was that small that it wouldn't have even satisfied a 3 year old's appetite. That was all I was served. When the bill came, it was much higher than what we had budgeted for. These ... Read the complete review

The earthquake hit Naples and a large part of Southern Italy on 23rd November 1980. I arrived in Naples at a time of aftershocks. The comfortable and almost empty Palace Hotel, in Piazza Garibaldi, was most welcoming. At dinner I had the restaurant to myself. A few workmen were filling in cracks on the walls. Along dark and narrow Via S.Biagio d.Librai, in the slummy Spacca quarter, fires were lit in the street; and beside glowing embers sat stallholders selling everything from smuggled cigarettes and live eels to imaginatively carved toy castles and sensuous angels. The occasional Fiat struggled to squeeze past the crowds without knocking over ... Read the complete review

Ok guy, so you want to visit Naples, uh... Let me see, you are blond&pale, dressed with shorts and a singlet, with some stinky sandals that could be Saddam's bacteriological weapons and carrying a rucksack heavier than your girlfriend. Ok, dont' worry, you could look like a terrible human case but you're in the hands of art (stai in mano all'arte), I'll give you some tricks, because I'm tired to see all those Brit tourists shuffling their feet on the pavement trying to cross the road. *CROSSING THE STREET* It's easy! Just try to seem very self-confident and remember all the time you spent playing videogames (NO! Not ... Read the complete review
