In 1981 I was dragged kicking and screaming to live in a country that I had never heard of. I was six years old and the moment I arrived in Nepal, my opinion changed forever - I was hooked.

As a six year old the 'scenery' did not hold much interest to me!!! I loved the adventure and the freedom. The Horseriding, the swimming, riding my bike for miles and miles. There was no TV where we lived, so for two years I played and learnt and had the most wonderful innocent childhood.

As I have got older the things I remember are different. Things I didn't appreciate then, I now look back on with amazement. The snow capped mountains, the green fields full of Buffalo, the tropical plants and trees and the dusty noisy towns full of ancient temples. So many different extremes of climate and enviroment. The people were so friendly, many had nothing but were willing to give you what little they did have. Happy, smiling people always laughing and joking through tough times and even more tough times. So as you can probably tell I have a passion for this small but amazing country.

I read a newspaper article once that observed that the base camp at Mount Everest has recently come to resemble a land fill site. Coke cans, crisp packets, bottles - all little presents left behind by us westerners just to serve as a permenant reminder of our presence. So really the purpose of this opinion is to ask anyone who is going to Nepal to enjoy the beauty, enjoy the people but please please take your litter with you!!

Two years after we moved to Nepal I was dragged kicking and screaming again - this time I didn't want to leave. There was a tradition of giving flower garlands to people who were leaving the country and as you crossed a certain bridge near the airport you were supposed to stop and throw your garlands into the river. As I watched those garlands race down river, I will always believe a little part of me went with them...
