North Carolina was probably one of my first true loves. It is located on the east coast of the United States of America, and is bordered by Virginia, Tennessee, Georgia and South Carolina. It was one of the original thirteen states and was named after King Charles (or Carolus, in Latin). It is the 28th largest state in the USA and contains the highest peak in the eastern US, Mt Mitchell. There are a number of major airports in North Carolina, the main one being in Raleigh. Every so often you just get this idea that you want to "get away from it all" - the daily slog, the everyday existence, dull routine. Even if life is usually pretty good, but you still experience that urge to do something different just once in a while. That's precisely how we felt this past week. Our 17th wedding anniversary fell on Saturday this year, 3rd August, and just this once, we wanted to "do" something to celebrate. In the past financial problems, raising children, and work commitments when the day has fallen during the week, have always thwarted our attempts to treat ourselves. Finally this year, it had come on a weekend, ... Read the complete review

With apologies to Longfellow: "Nestled in the Smoky Mountains, with a river running through it, is the town of Cherokee, where Tsali's people now are free. Come go fishing in the river, visit the village - Oconaluftee, see the pageant in the theatre, learn the history of the Cherokee". Sometimes you just get this idea that you want to "get away from it all"- the everyday existence, the daily slog, dull routine. Maybe life is usually pretty good, but you still experience that urge to do something different just once in a while. That's what happened to us this past week. ... Read the complete review

North Carolina is almost unknown as a holiday destination, lying between the 2 far more popular locations of Washington and Florida. I spent 3 weeks living at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill while doing some research, and 2 more driving round the state so I suppose I know it as well as any British tourist is likely to. I'll do my best not to make this just a report of my own visit, but forgive me if I lapse a little..... Getting there is fairly easy. North Carolina's airport: Raleigh-Durham is called an international airport but actually has only one intercontinental flight. Fortunately for us that's to and from Gatwick ... North Carolina is a great place to visit if you're looking for a nice peaceful vacation. This state offers something for everyone, no matter what the season or your tastes are. In the summer, enjoy a relaxing day on one of our sandy beaches. There's nothing more calming and relaxing than laying on the beach, watching the waves, and listening to the sounds of the ocean. If you like the mountains, there's beautiful Ashville, North Carolina. With Sking, Grandfather Mountain, Tweetsy Railroad, and so much more, there's enough to do to keep you busy, but not too much that you don't have time to enjoy the changing of the leaves in the fall. ...
