Nowadays there remains a few traces of the empire and this is one of the main reasons for visiting to the town: the Grand Hotel with the billiards room, the golf club, the race course and guest houses. It is also an excellent place to stay if you want to make the superb trip out to World's End. Nuwara Eliya is in the south of the island, in the middle of the tea country but higher in altitude and therefore cooler and less lush. It was because of the climate - which results in a landscape similar to North Wales or the Highlands of Scotland - that the movers and shakers in imperial Ceylon made the town their "holiday" resort, it being the relief it is from the heat and humidity elsewhere on the island.
