This however is normal in Odessa & it is normal for a girl to wear a see-though top to go to work in an office! Because of how they dress, this makes some visitors think that all the girls are prostitutes - this is not the case. With 1 million people, Odessa is a mix of holiday resort & industrial sea port. In the days of the USSR, Odessa was a popular holiday resort for the whole of the Soviet Union. Now, 10 years after independence, Odessa & the whole of Ukraine has slid into poverty & crime thanks to government incompetence & corruption. There are still some attractive places to see, the area around Potenkin steps is attractive as is the beautiful opera house. There is a wonderful little bazaar in Gor Sad (city garden) & good shopping along Deribasovskaya street which even has it's own McDonalds!
