SVAMPEN Translating as ‘the mushroom’, Svampen is a famous water tower visible from the train when entering the city. Built in 1958, you can obtain great views over the city from the top of the 50-metre high structure. The tower is open from 11am until 6pm, admission is free. The scenic city of Orebro is located on the western shores of Lake Hjalmaren approximately 200km from Stockholm. Not exactly on the tourist map, I nevertheless spent a highly enjoyable few days here while visiting a friend back in late-February. GETTING THERE I arrived at Orebro’s central railway station on a direct train from Stockholm’s Arlanda Airport. The journey time was just under two hours with the fare being a reasonable 160 Kr.
