Winemaking took place here for years, but really didn't take off until comparatively recently. The grapes are typically Pinot Noir and Pinot Gris. There have also been some award winning chardonnays in the region. While I happened to ... more |

Seeing as I have had the urge to write travel reviews lately, I thought I would share with you my experiences of yet another part of Western America, and that is Oregon. Oregon is a coastal state. Indeed it has about four hundred miles of coastline. On the map, it is the state immediately below Washington, and immediately above California. I took a trip here to have a holiday at the home of my American CEO, who I had worked with in the UK and Australia for six years. I flew into Portland from Sydney and via Los Angeles into Portland Airport. I always flew around the world when on business, as it worked out a lot cheaper, and so I was able to build a ... Oregon, is a state located in the north-west part of the U.S. The big difference from Oregon and California is that Oregon is alot greener, with more trees. On the down-side, it's almost immpossible to move there and find a job, if you are not from Oregon. It's a great place to retire though. You can forget about the rat race of the big city. Oregon is the kind of place where you can take in the scenery, and enjoy a good vacation. The only exeption being Portland. My Grandparents retired in Oregon, and I made a point to visit them every year. They lived in Grants Pass, a small town in south Oregon. It's a nice place, with big trees, nice ... Oregon is a great place for a fly-drive if you like scenery and plenty of things to see and do in an uncommercialised environment. Rather than give an overview which you can get from a guidebook, here's some highlights... 1. Columbia River Gorge, especially historic highway 30 passing the big waterfalls. For a rarely visited waterfall, try Elowah falls at Yeon State Park, a couple of miles past Multnomah then about 1km walk through beautiful forest. Cascade Locks is a nice little central place to stay (cheaper than Hood Rover). 2. Lost Lake above Hood River - but only go if the weather is clear enough for views as it's a long drive and ... Oregon is my favourite state. Although it is thousands of miles away from where I live it draws me back every other year. It has such a lot going for it. The scenery is so varied. The coastline changes from cliffs where you can spot the blowhole of a whale as it travels up (or down) to the sandy coves with rocky outcrops where the sea otter plays in the kelp. There are lighthouses and quaint fishing villages which overlook the Pacific ocean, so aptly named as it always seems peaceful. Travelling inland the scenery changes to woodland with the many different trees both deciduous and evergreen rising up the low coastal hills. Cresting these the lush Willamette Valley ... In the summer of 1999 I visited the west coast of America, after spending a week in California I went with my family on a cycle tour of the Oregon coastline. We flew into Portland airport, and cycled through the city. Although we didn't spend much time there, as we had to make it to a motel before dark, the city looked very pleasant, nice streets and buildings - A bit of character. We cycled along the main roads, as there were few smaller roads to choose from. Although there was a wide area for cyclists at the side of the road the traffic was a little fast in places. We found an out-of-town motel, reasonable quality and a good price - And ate a ... Read the complete review
