Advantages: beautiful city, interesting sites

Disadvantages: none

If you're on Majorca for a holiday, you definitely shouldn't miss a trip to Palma. I found it to be a really interesting city to explore, and even if you get lost (as I did a number of times.. I'd like to blame the inaccurate map but that would be a bit disingenuous!), it isn't so big that you will be lost for a very long time.

The Cathedral on the waterfront is stunning and worth taking a look inside as it's very impressive. There is a small museum inside the Cathedral as well, to give one a feel for it's history and see a different side to the island other than the resort towns, as it's history has seen it occuped by various nations through the centuries.

There is a large market in Palma as well, part of which sells 'antiques' (I wouldn't bet on their autheticity but they are very pretty!) and another part which sells things like t-shirts, bags etc for which haggling is welcome!
The shops close for the afternoon siesta and reopen again in the evening, but there are lots of great tapas bars and it certainly is great for people who what something a bit different. It is, in its own right, a living and thriving city, indeed, it is one of the richest cities in Spain, and seems like a different world from the blandness of some of the resorts.

A very good and interesting opinion on Palma, yes it is very attractive along the main front and around the Cathedral, however, take a drive around the ring road and you will see a very different Palma - oh - and don't forget Palma has the worst airport in europe, bar none !! - you can walk for about half a mile to your departure point.

When I went to Majorca about 5 years ago, I stayed in the north of the island, and never got around to visiting Palma. However, I did see quite a bit of the north and west of the island, which was also very interesting, and I can highly recommend it.

Good call, refreshing to hear someone in my age group that is able to consume as much culture, as their is nightlife, in Spain.
