The war between North and South Korea never officially ended. Add to that the communist poverty and possible nuclear capacity only a few miles over the border - and you have the tangeable artifacts of history and a potentially disasterous future before your very eyes. To get to the border, you must go on an organised tour and book well in advance. Local South Koreans can go on this, but it requires a 6 month wait and extensive background checks. Located a mere 50 kilometres north of Seoul, the village of Panmunjom has been the site of the world's longest-running peace talks for almost fifty years. As the only place in the 248km long DMZ where people are permitted this is truly a must-see for anyone visiting Korea.
