Paris ... Īle-de-France region ("Region Parisienne"). Paris has an estimated population of 2,153,600 within city limits (2005 est.). The Paris urban area has a population of 9.93 million; a vast commuter belt around the same completes the Paris "aire urbaine" (roughly: "metropolitan area") that, with its population of 11.5 million, is one of the most populated areas of its kind in Europe. Paris' strategic location at a crossroads between land and river trade routes in lands of abundant agriculture had made it one of France's principal cities by the 10th century, rich with Royal palaces and demurs, wealthy Abbeys and a cathedral; by the 12th century Paris had become one of Europe's foremost centres of learning and the arts. Today, Paris is a major influence in politics, fashion, business, arts and science. The city serves as an important hub of intercontinental transportation and is home to universities, sport events, opera companies and museums of international renown, making it an attraction for over 30 million foreign visitors per year.

You followed Rue De L'Ouest, turned left on to Avenue du Maine, then right on to Boulevard du Montparnasse. The metro is so simple to use, especially if you know a little French (even very basic) or you have used the English underground. From here we took to Metro to the Eiffel Tour for a really ... more

Premium Review Paris: Dirty old town, dirty old town... (1947 words)

Paris the capital city of France, with 2.2 million inhabitants (11 million in the entire Paris region), welcomes 45 million tourists each year. It is often referred to as the most romantic city in the world. It's sister city is Rome, you may have heard the famous quote 'Only Paris is worthy of Rome, Only Rome is worthy of Paris'. It is situated in the North of France on the River Seine, in the Ile de France area. My opinion? Paris, the city of romance? Not so much. I have been to Paris 6 times now, and my most recent trip was very disappointing. When I first went I was 11/12 in the first year of secondary school. We had activities week at the end ...  Read the complete review

Premium Review Take a trip to Grand Pari! (284 words)

Paris is the capital of France and is situated in the northern part. It is a very busy and romantic city. I first went to Paris over 10 years ago. Since that time I have been back twice both at different times of the year. I particularly like Paris in the Spring. The weather is getting better and the surrounding countryside is beautiful. If you like art galleries and museums Paris is an excellent weekend break destination. The Louve is particularly impressive with a number of French art works housed here. It is right in the centre of Paris so is easily accessable via tube or bus. The Eiffel Tower isn't far from here but queues can be very long. Get ...  Read the complete review

Premium Review Paris: A magical city (178 words)

Paris: the city of love, of art, of cute cafes and of berets. I love Paris in the springtime and, actually, all year round. A brilliant city, there is so much to see, to do, to taste, to experience. Attractions: Firstly, the Louvre. This insanely huge museum is easy to get lost in, but is full of wonderful art, of a diversity that spans decades. Of course, the main attraction is the Mona Lisa, and get there early to get anywhere near it! Then there is La Tour Eiffel. Expensive to climb, I admit, but worth it as the views are incredible from the very top. And then my personal favourite: Les Champs Elysses, where everyone fashionable in France shops and home to ...  Read the complete review

Premium Review You won't have seen Paris if you haven't seen the canals (271 words)

I wanted to write about a part of Paris that not many people know about. I really hope that those reading this, will, on their next or first trip to Paris include my suggestion in their itinerary. Of all the people I know who have visited Paris- they didn't know this secret- so let me share it with you. To get the true feeling of being in Paris, then leave the main tourist trail and head for the water- no, not The Seine, but one of the three Parisian Canals. The canal cruise I would highly recommend is called "Old Paris" on the Saint Martin Canal it takes 2.5 hours and is simply heaven. It leaves from Paris Arsenal Marina and goes ...  Read the complete review

Premium Review Paris: An ok break but not the 'Capital of Love' (463 words)

I visited Paris in December 08 for a weekend and must say that as a place, it is very over rated. Me and my partner for the Euro Star train to Paris. Once you get to the station you must queue for a taxi at the side of the station. While we was waiting it was raining, so we got extremely wet. There is some cover but this is not long, as opposed to the queue which is. The average taxi price is around 12 Euros' but you constantly get people coming up to you asking if you want a taxi for 100 Euro plus and you will not have to queue. While in this queue we saw a group of tramps fighting. These tramps try to put everyone's bags in your taxi (yes the whole 10 ...  Read the complete review
