Advantages: Style and good weather
Disadvantages: too far from the beach
I took a trip to see my son, who lives out in Pasadena and I had a brilliant time. To start with the locals were very hospitable, and very polite. I am not young, and yet the young people out there treated me with respect and courtesy. Oh I wish it were so in the UK. As you go to the old town you come to a place where sidewalk cafes are the norm. You can dirve up and your car will be parked for you (and returned when you are ready.) You can get every concievable type of cooking. One of the best I tried was a Thai restaurant where there was a photo of the boss with his arm around Bruce Lee. The food was excellent. I could say the same for all the resturants. There was even a sushi resturant where you sat around a bar and the food was provided in little barges on a miniature canal and you helped yourself. My best memory was however that of the book shop. In the main street at about 10 pm I went to the bookshop next to Starbucks coffee house. It was full of people of all ages. From little children lying on the floor reading, to a young man sitting on an armchair with his girl on his lap reading to him. There was also a number of young students at tables taking notes from books. I will never believe the films which show American homes with no books in them. In the town square (for want of a better word) the was a glass (yes - glass) sculpture which was not vandalised. AND they showed free film shows on a screen on the wall when we were all eating and drinking in the open air. There is so much in Pasadena - and all good. Go and see for yourselves its worth it.
