Advantages: Quiet and friendly

Disadvantages: Rocky beaches and plenty of rats.

The tiny village of Loggos on the Greek island of Paxos is everything you would wish for. The prettiest village on Paxos is laid back and friendly. Here you can watch the locals bring in their fish at the harbour, gut them on their boats and then take them into their family restaurants ready to be eaten that night.
There are six or seven tavernas ranging from meals such as a greek salad and taramosalata for starters followed by moussaka and local wine for around £14 for two or for those desiring a more upmarket meal how about lobster pasta (you can choose your own) with salad and a superior bottle of greek wine for just under £40.

The swimming here is excellent, beautiful clear water, ideal for snorkelling, however the beaches which are described as pebbly in the brochures actually comprise of small rocks and getting in and out of the water is not easy. Jelly shoes are a necessity.

From the island it is easy to reach the smaller island of Anti Paxos which has a fantastic sandy beach and where the water is clear blue and turqoise. Boat trips run several times a day.

Further afield the sea cat will take you to the wonderful island of Cephalonia (see separate review). If you book an organised tour, a coach will take you on a trip of the "must visit" parts of the island.

Now for the negatives.
Amongst the literature in the place where we were staying was an article on wildlife. The item stated that "rats were indigenous to the island". I think that was a polite way of saying that there are plenty of them on Paxos and we had several sightings of them during our two weeks stay. People we spoke to had seen them in their gardens, on their verandahs and even in a bar. If like me you have a phobia for these furry fiends then Paxos maybe not for you. I decided a few ouzos gave me a bit of courage and helped me sleep soundly in my bed!.

Summary: A Greek island in the Ionian

Spent two summer holidays in Loggos...never seen a rat yet! Cat population would keep them at bay!!

I saw a resort on tv which featured a lot of rats. Perhaps it was Paxos. :-)
