Advantages: Beautiful weather, cheap food, cigarettes and booze, friendly people, lots to do

Disadvantages: didn't stay long enough!

I have just returned from a week in the lovely village of Pefkos, Rhodes. and I am going to be totally honest with you- it was the best holiday I've ever had. In the past I have been to Spain, Corfu, Bulgaria, and France, both touristy areas and more rural, and Pefkos has beaten them all!!!

My holiday was with tour operator Thomas Cook, who usually I would have no business with, but my friend organised the trip so I wasn't too fussed. It cost us £252 each for a week in the sun, at a 3* self catered resort. They were really helpful and easy to get along with, and had everything sorted, including our transfers and ideas for excursions. My party of 3 did not do any of the things TC suggested, but we did explore the village and find some excellent (and cheap) things to do...

Pefkos is about an hour's drive from Rhodes Airport, and the initial coach journey to our apartments was an easy and pleasant one; nice views of the island and air conditioned!! It is also a very short drive from Lindos, which is a more clubby and shopping part of the island- go there!! 7 euros for a cab, each way.

We arrived at our apartments, Matina, and were really impressed with our resort. They have a newly built restaurant and bar, both of which are expertly decorated, great, cheap food and absoltuely lovely staff. Don't miss out on the free nightly quiz (with a twist?) which was great fun and with great prizes!! There are other theme nights which were all brilliant- Greek night was fantastic with food and dancing, Kareoke was hilarious and the BBQ was quality!

Our studio was very clean and tidy, spacious and with a gorgeous sea view (we were in room 105). We had a TV and kitchenette (we were self catered), 3 beds, a veranda with table and chairs, a dining table, desk with mirror and air conditioning at 40 extra euros for the week (WORTH IT!). It was cleaned daily except Sunday and was great value for money.

The weather was stunning; around 40 degrees every day in early July, and beautifully cool from around 9pm. Lovely light breezes most days, so we didn't boil too much...but make sure you get your cream on every hour as we did see a lot of lobsters!!

The island itself is stunning- our best day was going out on the Glass Bottomed Boat, which was a short walk from our resort. You'll see signs all along the main road; if you walk through Maria's supermarket you can't miss them. The captain and his assistant are just the friendliest people, and they offer 3 deals; a trip to Lindos, a 1 1/2 hour trip or the 3 bays trip- we picked the 3 bays for 18 euros and with 2 drinks included. It was spectacular!! Don't miss it!!!

The beach was gorgeous, not too big, with sunbeds at 4 euros each for the day. The sea is just beautiful- clear, warm waters. Just watch out for rocks on the sea bed!!

There are plenty of shops, restaurants and supermarkets on the main Pefkos village road, I'd recommend Maria's for a wide variety of cheap food, booze (nearly all are cheaper here than at the airport) and cigarettes (you can get Embassy in there and NOT at Rhodes airport). There's also the Tsambikos bakery selling lovely Greek pastry delights; it's on a hill with a huge sign, just up from the taxi rank, you can't miss it.

I am definitely going back to Pefkos and I'd recommend it along with Matina apartments in a heartbeat- the best holiday everrrr!!!!!

Summary: Book it today, dudes

I went there in 1985 and 1986 and it was totally undeveloped - we had the beach to ourselves!
