Having visited Penang and seen all of the tourist attractions many times over the past fifteen years, the one that really stands out for me is the one that is the least advertised and that is a trip up to the top of Penang hill. The hill is accessible via a funicular train which was first opened for use in 1923. The train ... more

Penang is my ultimate destination now and it is the place that I foresee that this legless fool will finally retire in and hang up his false leg for good. It is without a doubt my favourite place in the world, it is just so old-worldly, cosmopolitan, it is steeped in culture and it has lots of history and atmosphere. Penang is also a gourmet's paradise, the diversity of different ethnic food outlets available can suit everyone's taste and you do not have to travel very far to find what you like, just a fairly short stroll around the main roads and small back streets in Georgetown and you will surely find something ideal for your taste or fancy. Having visited ...  Read the complete review

Long golden beaches, superb accommodation, superb sightseeing and great shopping , what more could you ask for? Ferringhi beach is on the north coast of Penang and forms the main tourist area of the island. There are many superb hotels along the beach but the Ferringhi Beach Hotel is not one of them (this is on a rocky promontory quite some distance from the beach ? too far to walk). We stayed at the Casuarina Beach Hotel and were absolutely delighted. Toward the western end of the beach, far enough to be tranquil but near enough to the centre of activity to walk there in a few minutes, it is a splendid hotel with a nice pool area, watersports facilities and a choice of ...  Read the complete review

A trip to Penang is really like a trip back in time. Penang has the highest number of historical buildings in Malaysia and is home to the famous E&O Hotel, which was built in the late 19th century by two Armenian brothers, who were traders during the time when Penang ws an important spice trading island in the Far East. Walk down any of the streets such as Chulia street,Armenian Street,Cannon Street or Love Lane, and it will show you the splendour of Penang's past in the form of its lovely old and ornate structures once housed prominent European families or wealthy Chinese traders and even some portion of the small jewish community that once held a place ...  Read the complete review

I went on a short trip to Penang this summer and it was absolutley brilliant. I have family over there, so I got to see some places that tourists probably wouldn't know about...as well as some of the more popular sites. As soon as I got off the plane, I was hit by the heat. Wow, it was hot and very humid. It is advisable to change into shorts before you get off the plane. I travelled from Singapore and the aircon in the airport was at subzero temperatures, so I didn't bother changing. Penang is very beautiful and has some lovely countryside. I was taken up into the mountains where there are a lot of fruit farms. It's great seeing ...  Read the complete review

Premium Review Penang - plenty to do (180 words)

Penang is an large island joined to the west coast of Malaya by a causeway. On it you should find something to please everyone. If you want a beach holiday then there are miles of good beaches with plenty of hotels (used by package companies) at Batu Ferangi. There is one long road with the hotels between it and the beach. Along this road there are innumerable reataurants, shops and stalls etc. In fact if you are beach, and water sport orientated you could happily spend the whole holiday here. If you are not then this is probably not the best choice - stay in Georgetown (the island's capital) or another part of Penang. Penang has plenty to offer besides beaches - ...  Read the complete review
