Advantages: Charming place
Disadvantages: A bit dirty and crowded
Beautiful sandy beaches, good food, friendly people and historical temple, mosque and old English fort. All these things can be visited in Penang. Penang is an island north of Malaysia. During the 19th century, it prospored as a British colony habour. Even today, when you walk down some parts of Penang, you can see old colonial buildings mixed with modern office towers. One of the biggest Kuan Yin statue is situated on the hillslope of the beautiful Kek Lok Si temple. I loved walking the narrow road up to the temple as along it, you can find many small shops and stalls selling small statues, fan, painting and clothes. In the centre of the island, there is a small hill called Bukit Bendera. Do take the funicular train up the hill and get a wonderful view of the whole island from there. There is also a strange little snake temple somewhere on the island. There used to be quite a lot of snakes in the temple. However, nowadays, the snakes seem to have dissappered. Penang is also the food paradise of the north. Penang laksa, char koay teow, satay, fried cuttlefish and many other types of snacks can be obtained at Gurney Drive. Buy these little snacks and enjoy a walk down the beachfront. However, Penang is slightly dirty compared to Singapore an island south of Malaysia. Yet despite that, the charm of Penang stay as one of my sweetest memory.

- 30/06/00 I absolutely agree with snliew that Penang is a food haven as i've personally been there several times . Kek Lok Si is a wonderful temple to visit as well whatever religion you may be. There's also a tortoise feeding pond which is quite nice. |
