Advantages: Peaceful and delicious

Disadvantages: Too far from England

Have you ever wished to go back in time? This beautiful village dating back to the early part of the nineteenths century is a museum in which you can stay overnight. It is one of the few places I have been back to even from England. My wife and I stayed here for one night in 1993 and we promised ourselves a return. The millenium saw the three day two night return visit and it was still as pleasant as ever, so aptly named. We stayed in a limestone built house dated 1811 which had been a hospital in the Civil War. The food at the Shaker Family House was superb, freshly cooked produce in traditional dishes served there over many years. It is a peaceful tree filled village without traffic and one seems to slow down and relax. Visit the workshops to see broom making, laundering, weaving, dying and learn about their agriculture and religion. We were so lucky we experienced a Shaker funeral of one of the Eldresses of the period 1840,it is only staged but once a year. However there are other special weekends throughout the year. It is a shame that we live so far away for we would be there much more often. But we will return again someday.

Sounds great...where in the states is it? Or did I miss the location....
If you like old world charm we spend some long weekends in Deadham on the Suffolk/Essex border which, in the heart of Constable country has many of the qualities you mentioned. It's the area that "Lovejoy" was filmed in.
