Pokhara is where everyone goes before starting to treck into the Himalayas, because of this it can be overlooked. It is actually an interesting place in its own right, and there are many day walks you can do which means you don’t have to carry all your kit. I hired a mountain bike whilst I was there, the roads are not too hectic certainly not like Kathmandu although you need to watch out for cows. The town is located on the edge of a beautiful lake, which provides the local restaurants with excellent fish. We arrived in Pokhara by bus from Khatmandu. It was like an oasis after the hustle and bustle and exhaust fumes. We checked into a little guest house about half a mile away from the town centre. The weather was perfect for the first few days, clear blue skies and hot but cool at night. Behind our guest house we had the most incredible view of the snowcapped Fishtail mountain. It is extremely cheap to stay here and easy to just check into any guesthouse with prior booking. We ate a couple of meals at our guest house but everything we ordered tasted the same - curry. One of Nepal’s largest towns, Pokhara barely matches the size in population of a small English town, and yet boasts the character of a lakeside city much like Geneva with the sleepy feel of a small Spanish village just emerging from a siesta. Nowhere comes close on this planet to the perfection that Pokhara has to offer. And yet this is just at the centre of a town, which sprawls for 5 or 6 kilometres along the valley floor.
