Advantages: Great country and cheap
Disadvantages: Local language
Poland will join Europe on may 2004, although it is still not very clear how will Polish citizens be treated in UK in terms of access to the job market. For the British tourist, Poland may not be the most obvious destination. It is the aim of this review to offer an overview of the attractions of Poland. For the tourist, Krakow is probably the most interesting destination. With his castle and its well preserved historic old town, Krakow is a city rich in history and with a vibrant night life too, given the large student population there. A tip if you stay for few days, in terms of accommodation, is to rent a flat. They still cost relatively little. Polorbis, in London, tel 0207 636 2217 can arrange flats for as little as 25 pounds per day for 2 people sharing. I stayed in Krakow twice, the first time with a friend in a student hostel, and the second time in a flat she booked for us, through a local agent. You can fly to Krakow with Ba and Lot, although the schedule is not very good and the 7.50 am flight to come back to London is a bit punishing, expecially if the night before you were partying hard until 2 am! Not far from Krakow are the mountains, The Tatra mountains, of which Zakopane is the most visited village, with its typical houses in wood, and more far, towards Ukraine, mountains where there is little sight of European tourists and many great walking trials. Warsaw is the capital. During WWII it was totally destroyed, its historic part is fake, totally reconstructed. It is the business center of Poland and in my experience, a safe place to visit. The Marriot Hotel is the place to stay, and there is a nice view form its top. I would not recommend visiting Warsaw as a tourist before you have been to Krakow and Gdansk, but it is the easiest city to fly into. Gdansk is in the north, near the city. It has a compact old center and pl
enty of stalls selling amber. It is often swept by wind, and in May I had snow there. Polish food has got a lot of meat. It is normally accompanied by beers. It is still cheap, and in itself enough a god reason to visit Poland. Polish language is of the Slavic group, and has many sounds like rz sch that are hard to pronounce. If you thought that French was hard, give it a miss! In tourist place people speak English, old people still get by with Russian and young educated Polish all have a good command of English. However, on a bus, you may find that the conductor does not speak a word of English. ALL IN ALL, Poland is surely a country worth visiting at least once, if you have not done it yet.
