It's an unpretentious city, Porto, an honest city, not one to put on airs. Whilst other cities of similar intrinsic interest might be said to "boast" various attractions, you'd never say that of Porto. It's just not a boastful kind of place. This modesty is arguably no more than realistic. Porto isn't, and couldn't pretend to be, in the very top rank of Europe's cities for art, architecture, history or grandeur. It seems a while since I wrote a Portuguese review so instead of writing about towns in the Algarve I thought I would take you on a trip up North to Porto or as the Portuguese call it, Oporto. Don't let the fact that Porto is a port and an industrial city put you off visitng. It is a city just as beautiful as Lisbon but a little more chaotic and a touch oriental. Overview ~~~~~~ Like Lisbon, Porto stands at the mouth of a river just before it opens out into the Atlantic Ocean, but the Douro Valley is deep and narrow, so the banks are higher and steeper and the old town smaller, with a confusing maze of streets at its heart.
