Praira Da Luz A 50 minute drive from Faro and 10 minutes from Lagos, brings you into Praira Da Luz. Not yet developed by tourism, Luz is the ideal get away, if you really do want to get away. There isn't a lot happening, no magnificent golf courses or 5* hotels, but the location is ideal for travelling around the western Algarve. Everything is within walking distance in Luz, including the shops and local amenities - or what there is of them. One particular restaurant brings the crowds from miles around: The Fort. Hundreds of years old, it still retains its charms, and being situated overlooking the water, it's ideal for spending a relaxing night. The prices are relatively cheap, £30 for a 3 course meal for 2 with a bottle of wine thrown in. The portions are large and the service excellent. A word of warning, though: Book early. Even in the off season, it is still pretty difficult to get a table during peak times. Around 9pm the place calms downs and you will get a table whether you have booked or not. Luz has its own beach, but it really isn't anything to write home about. Things to do in Luz are pretty limited and if travelling without a car, you will run out of things to do very quickly - especially if you have kids in tow. With transportation, however, you can explore the surrounding countryside and spend many a happy hour flitting from place to place, taking refreshment from one of the many older Portuguese women selling her citrus fruit by the roadside. If you fancy a week of relaxation, with the most strenuous things being lifting a glass of wine, then you could do much worse than taking a break in Luz. If night life and adventure are your cup of tea, or you have kids to entertain, then you would be better trying one of the more livelier resorts. As for accommodation, we stayed in a friend's villa, so couldn't accurately describe the hotels or their respective prices. Primarily Luz appears to be
a development of private villas, some small some not. However, we did notice a lot of building work going on and was reliably informed that Luz is being earmarked to take the over-spill from Lagos. So, in a few years' time, maybe there will be more scope for holidaying in Luz. I'm not sure whether this is a good thing, as Luz's character is its retention of the slower Portuguese way of life.

- 26/10/01 I am staying in the Monte Sao Pedro villas in November so your opinion has really helped me as guide books basically say that there is nothing to do there but visit churches! |

- 05/03/01 I remember going there when I was 16 and I had a great time. As I remember there were 2 nightclubs and quite a few bars, there were also banana boat rides on the beach and some nice shops and market stalls to browse, there was certainly enough to keep me and my friend busy with just a couple of day trips to Lagos and the surrounding areas. Thanks for reminding me of a great holiday Phil. |

- 19/12/00 Jill, taking the kids into account, you might find enough to do for a week. Then again, I suppose if the kids are old enough to travel around, then simply treated as a base, Luz is perfect. |
