Providence ... the city is the second-largest city in New England. The population within the city limits is estimated to be 176,862 as of 2005, and is the anchor of the 35th largest metropolitan population in the country, with an estimated MSA population of 1,622,520, exceeding that of Rhode Island by about 60%. Despite extensive development in the city, many of its historic colonial buildings remain. Providence is located at the head of Narragansett Bay on the Providence River, in the northern part of the state.

I stayed in North Providence, RI, for a month in october 1999. I stayed at a friends house, so I didnt have to book into a hotel or anything. It is a really really nice place to visit, with its really quite side, of the residential areas, to the densly populated, very commercialised city areas where the large shopping malls can be located. Another great thing about Providence is that it isnt really all that far from anywhere. A couple of hours drive will take you into Boston, which is a great city, and if you drive about 4 hours in the opposite direction, you've got New York.
