Advantages: Caribbean sea and beaches, superb food and drink
Disadvantages: Hurricanes, wary of locals
My wife and I stayed here in September 98 and unfortunately was there during hurricane George !! It certainly was an experience and one I would not like to repeat again. The hurricane came on the 13th day of our holiday. They had to shut the airport down and no flights could come in or out of the island. After a few days and the hurricane had stopped, they moved us to the north of the island to the Puerta Plata beach resort which was also lovely for another 5 days. Apart from that the Boca Chica resort was three star and we could not fault it in any way. There was a huge pool there, all the food you could ever want and drinks on tap 12 hours a day. During the day we had really good entertainment, water volleyball and silly competitions etc. and at night time the entertainment was superb, mostly local themes like dancing and singing etc. The local dance is Merengue and the staff are always keen to get you up on the stage and teach you the steps. The staff are always friendly but sometimes can be a bit letchy (I think that's how you spell it!) We had our own bit of secluded beach with our own security guard, otherwise the locals pester you a lot trying to sell you their wares, fare enough I suppose as it's classed as a third world country. We had a barbecue on the beach every day and a bar there, so you can carry on your all-inclusive down at the beach as well. The Carribean sea is beautiful but even in the sea you get the locals trying to sell you stuff, like hats, scarves and jewellery mostly. You can go out of your resort but I did feel a bit worried sometimes, as my wife is blond with quite a large chest, she seemed to get a lot of attention, well that's how I saw it anyway. I nearly had a row with a car full of guys who were leering and shouting at her but I thought better of it as there were four of them!! No doubt an excellent time, and even better if you can get a cheap deal for about 600 pound through
Teletext or similar. Best time to go is November through March as it doesn't rain as much. I could go on for pages about this place because for the money, it's excellent. BigLee

- 12/10/00 Hope you have a great time, as I certainly did. It's a very affordable Caribbean island. |

- 12/10/00 Nice review. I have had similar experiences in the Carribean with weather (Hurricane Lenny) and the locals! I'm going to Dom. Republic for Christmas with my girlfriend so I'm well excited now! |
