Advantages: Mosaic Capital, Delicious Food, Elegant
Disadvantages: it is hot in the summer
Ravenna is part of Emilia Romagna, Italy, a region known for its great food. I highly recommend Ravenna to Mosaic enthusiast. It is located at the north-eastern part of Italy, just south of Venice and East of Bologna. The closest airport is Bologna. One can easily catch the train in Bologna that goes to Ravenna. The trip is about an hour and half. More than eight historical mosaic sites in Ravenna are named in the world cultural heritage site. Many things are made out of mosaic. This form of art expression is highly appreciated by the locals. From hotel lobby artwork, shop's signage, floor mat, window display, door handle, tourist souvenir to interior decorating, are full of mosaic artworks. This is an unique town full of historical monuments and modern shopping areas. It is easy to get around on foot. Tourist can have a bicycle for free. Delicious food with reasonable pricing! There are not too many tourists like Venice or Florence. If you would like to have a relax and educational vacation, this is the place to be. Some cultural heritage mosaic site opens on special evenings. On weekend evenings, some shops will open till midnight. I was there in late July and early August, the weather is a little bit hot! But most of the shops are having a big sale! It will be very hot to stay in places without air-conditioned. The piazza held special performance or events during weekends for the public for free entertainment. I would love to go there again soon!! ^ ! ^ **Mosaic Heritage Site: The Mausoleum of Galla Placidia The Cathedral Baptistry Sant' Apollinare Nuovo Arian Baptistry The Archiepiscopal Chapel Theodoric's Mausoleum The Basilica of San Vit
ale Sant' Apollinare in Classe **Places to eat: "Ca' de Ven " - Via Corrado Ricci, 24 (closed Monday) Don't miss the 'piadina' sandwich. It is a parma ham with soft melt cheese sandwich that is absolut ely delicious! This is the place where locals meet. High ceiling and beautifully furnished. There is a waitress that speaks English. "San Vitale" - Via Salara 20 (closed Tue) Moderate price, good food, good spagetti with meat sauce, good service. For those who has a difficult time ordering food in Italian, this is a good place to go for lunch. You can point at the food at the counter and it is a self-serviced cafeteria inside the church. "Bella Venezia" - Via IV Novembre 16 (closed Sun) Some Venetian dishes, nice outdoor tables. Moderate to expensive. At the centre of the town. Good shopping areas around Capital letters courtesy of: http://www.chuckleweb.co.uk/fixit.php

- 01/09/04 Hi! Why don't you read around a bit so that you can see what a VU travel report should be like? It would be nice if you structured your text a bit and didn't hop from museums to shops to bicycles in one paragraph. There's such a lot to say about Ravenna, pity you didn't tell us more. You seem to be a widely travelled person, I'm sure you could entertain us with really interesting travel opinions. Cheers, Malu (travel guide) |
