I hired a car and drove around the island, and immediately noticed that the locals drive just like their compatriots in mainland France, right down to specific nuances. All the infrastructure, the shops and public services are just like the rest of France and you sometimes forget that you are thousands of miles from Europe and only 100 miles from Mauritius. The two nicest beach areas I saw on the island were in and around the small resorts of Boucan Canot and Saint-Gilles-les-Bains. The island of Réunion is about 100 miles south-east of Mauritius in the Indian Ocean. It is difficult to get to except by air from mainland France and Mauritius. If you're in Mauritius for any length of time, you may well enjoy a short trip to Réunion. Réunion is part of France itself, not a colony or an overseas territory, but a département just like the Dordogne, Paris or Pas-de-Calais. As someone who has spent long periods living in France and on its borders, I feel very at home in France. When I landed at Réunion's airport, I immediately knew and felt I was in France and the EU.
