Advantages: Friendly people, good food

Disadvantages: Tour operators can rip you off!

For my first trip to Rhodes, we stayed in the resort village of Afandou. About 15 miles from the main town of Rhodes, Afandou is a traditional Greek village that has only been changed a little by tourists.

We stayed in a terrible set of apartments - the Aqua Maris. If you come to Afandou, do not stay here!! The rooms are tiny; there's no air conditioning and the bathrooms are in a poor state. Plus the water kept going off. We thought this was a feature of the island, but apparently it was the dodgy plumbing of our apartments alone. Plus, we had to pay extra for everything - hiring a fan cost us the equivalent of £3 a day!

Apart from the apartment, Afandou is a lovely, friendly village with some excellent restaurants. Walking down the main road takes you past some nice bars (selling incredibly cheap cocktails) and then on to the restaurant district. The places to eat are numerous and are all value for money - go for the restaurants that specialise in Greek cuisine rather than the ones that sell chips and burgers.

Afandou beach is quite shingly, but it's pretty and fairly quiet. We also took a trip to Rhodes Town (beautiful city) and to a tiny resort called Kalimethea, which is ideal for snorkling and exploring the ruins of an Italian spa baths on the shore of the cove!

DON'T book any boat trips from Rodes harbour through your rep: it's far cheaper to book them yourself from the harbour. Don't bother with the day trips to Marmaris in Turkey: there's very little to do there and the bazaar sells cheap designer rip offs and little else. And if you want to give scuba diving a go, check the people taking you are PADI certified. I asked our rep if the company taking us was: he said 'yes' and then I found out too late they weren't. Very dodgy.

All in all, we had a good holiday, but there were some sour points which I've learnt from. Don't go in July/August if you can help it - the temp
eratures can hit 40degrees which is very unpleasant when you're walking around!!!
