Advantages: Michelangelo

Disadvantages: Accomodation problems

If you are whipping past Italy and have time for only one city, then it has to be Rome. There is just so much one can do in this city, the Colloseum, St.Peter's Cathedral and the Sistine Chapel just to name a few. But my advice is to pick a few which you really like, and spend more time on it or you might end-up not appreciating any of it at all.
My top choice would be Vatican City which houses one of the great treasures of the world. Look out for Michelangelo's masterpiece, the Last Judgement and his ceiling frescos (some kind of mural painting technique) depicting the scenes from the old testament. A note of caution here, in your immense awe of the ceiling wonder, don't let pickpockets get the better of you.
And I've still not mentioned the Colloseum which housed the gladiatorial games during the time of the Ceasars. You can also find cheap T-Shirts at 5000 lire each outside tourist attractions. The T-shirts are a bit thin, but the designs are awesome.
Accomodation could be a problem however especially if you are a budget traveller and you're looking for a reasonably priced place during summer. Book well ahead to avoid having to pay expensive prices for hotels.
