Advantages: Short plane trip, well priced and fun!

Disadvantages: Some shop keepers can be pushy but a firm "No" sends them on their way

I've been to Salou a few times now, I'm one of those people where once I find something I like, I do back time and time again and Salou has never failed me yet.

Based on the coast quite close to Barcelona its cooler than the more southern regions which is great when you have children and its a nice short 2 hour plane ride.

The thing I love about Salou is that it has something for everyone, you have at either end a more sedate and traditional Spain with quaint little boutiques to shop away in and craft markets that sell handmade items, great if you love having a good root around at things. In the middle you have your basecamp. Now if you don't like placed that are quite commercial then don't go, it is full of English bars, restaurants and shops, however if you like what you know and you just want some no hassle time with your toes in the sand then you'll be fine.

Salou is amazing if you have children, the beach (which, yes can get very busy in peak times) has play gyms and climbing frames and things to play on, the bars have loads of kids discos and there is plenty laid on for them and of course the Spanish are fantastic with the kids. The sea is lovely and clean and does attract some nice fish which if you like snorkelling then you should be fine there. Me and my kids spent ages looking at all the fish that came along.

Salou is also home to the Port Aventura theme park, part of the universal theme parks. There are some great ride here and very well priced, we had a great time here seeing all the shows and I really liked that there were rides available for all us from my (then) 2 year old son to my child at heart fella. Prices in the park as normal aren't that cheap but if its only for a few days you don't really mind, its a lovely treat. Next to the theme park is costa caribe water park but I haven't been there so cannot say if its anygood, however there is another waterpark called Aquapolis which I went to and we had a great time, again very well priced, it was lovely and clean and had a great selection of rides and also a dolphin and seal show.

We enjoyed quite a few of the local bars, 007 had a fantasic magician on one night we were there, Titanic bar do fab entertainment and equally fab cocktails if you like that kind of thing. There are bars to suit every tastes, be it having a pint in the Rovers Return which is built into the rock face and has beautiful views over the bay or in the many night clubs there.

I'm sure there is loads more I could tell you but I really can't keep typing all night but I can say this holiday has never left me disappointed and I did actually nearly cry when we came home last time. If you're torn for your next summer holiday, give it a look.

Summary: A fab family summer holiday.

Salou was my first trip to Spain in the mid 1980's and had no complaints at all.

I went there in 1973 though no doubt it's changed beyond all recognition since then. It rained half the time lol and the beach was closed for 2 days because of massive plagues of Portuguese man'o war being washed up on the sand during a thunderstorm. Also I got very very very drunk and had to have a doctor out (well I was only 19 lol) - so though I did like the place, the memory of the holiday as a whole isn't too great.

Good review!
