Advantages: Cheap destination using the pound
Disadvantages: You could eat yourself to death
San Sebastian is located in the heart to the Spanish Basque Country and sits in a beautiful bay off the Atlantic. A short drive from Bilboa, which is also worth visiting for the famous Guggenheim Museum. The setting of the city is beautiful and romantic and easy to navigate. I spent 4 weeks there last year in an Intensive Spanish coarse (let me know if you want details!) and return as often as I can. The massive statue of Jesus stands on the top of a hill in the centre of the city is the landmark of San Sebastian. The big thing about this part of Spain is the TAPAS and in the Old City of San Sebastian you will find plenty. There are more bars per square metre than anywhere else in the world apparently. The thing is to have a drink and a tapas or two and move on to the next one. In Spain, you don’t eat dinner before 10pm so the tapas are meant to tide you over until mealtime. The shopping is Chic and Cheap due to the value of the Spanish Peseta to the pound and there are loads of great shops to explore. The streets are exceptionally clean and the Spanish here are always well dressed and love to go out! This creates a lovely atmosphere to explore this interesting city. The airport for San Sebastian is located in Hondarrabia, which is about a 15 min. drive away and is a tiny airport. It may be easier to fly to Bilbao or Biarritz in France, which is only about a 30 minute drive!
