Advantages: Gorgeous Scenery

Disadvantages: Little bit pricey

We had a couple of days in Sedona during a trip to the South West USA in April 2001. Sedona is supposed to be the Vortex Capitol of the World and very mystical. The high street is heaving with Tarot Card Readers and Spiritualists etc. I knew about this before I got there but didn’t tell my husband as he’s not into all that kind of stuff and I though it may put him off. I need not have worried as he hardly noticed the funky mystics against the breathtaking scenery that surrounds Sedona. In every direction there are stunning red rock formations. All the buildings in Sedona itself are painted sandstone red and leaf green to blend into the surrounding scenery. Even McDonalds is painted red with green arches. Apparently the only Mac’s in the world not to have golden arches but this was a condition of the planners.

We took a Pink Jeep tour into the rocks with our lovely guide Brenda. She pointed out the red rock formations that had special names such as Snoopy Rock, so called because it looks just like Snoopy lying atop his kennel. Coffee Pot Rock because it looks like a coffee pot. Turtle Rock, Elephant Rock….you get the picture. Our kids enjoyed trying to guess what the rocks names where and actually so did we.

Brenda was also a mine of information about Sedona’s history and culture. She told us how Sedona had been names after the wife of one of the first settlers there. She also pointed out celebrity homes belonging to Sharon Stone, Al Pacino, Gene Hackman and also the home of the late Lucille Ball. At approximately $34 per head we thought that the Pink Jeep tour was well worth it and we had a lot of fun whilst learning a lot too. The kids loved the bumpy ride.

I don’t know about Sedona’s mystical powers but I do know that it left a big impression on me and I cant wait to visit again someday.

Once you're away from the hawkers it's a beautiful area, well worth driving around.
