Seoul ... about 30 miles (~50 km) south of the North Korean border, also known as the de-militarized zone (DMZ). Seoul is an ancient city, having served as the historic capital of the Baekje Dynasty (18 BC – 660 AD) and Joseon Dynasty (1392-1910). The city became the capital of South Korea following the establishment of the South Korean government in 1948. Designated the status of a Special City, Seoul is administered directly by the national government. Seoul hosts more than three million registered vehicles and widespread traffic congestion is common. In recent years, the metropolitan government has undertaken extensive cleanup of the city's air and water pollution. The revival of Cheonggyecheon, a stream that flows through downtown Seoul, was a recent major urban beautification project.

When I visited East Asia I would like to have visited Tokyo but accomodation and living standard is much more expensive there. So I settled for Seoul instead - and how right was I. It turned out to be a fantastic advanture and I loved my time there. I would like to talk more about Seoul as it is a lively city with lots of clubs, restaurants, casinos and big shopping malls. --- seoul CULTURE --- Instead of going to a Western style pub, why not try a Korean style bar? When in Seoul, do what the people in Seoul do and order some side dishes to go along a drink. It is a kind of culture there. Booking clubs are one of the most common nightclubs ...  Read the complete review

Premium Review Seoul - One Odd City! (1152 words)

Braving the baffling coloured squiggles of the pervasive subway system, we navigate across town to the ancient palace of Changdeokgung. It stands very impressively with it's green and red decorated markings, and we decide to take a tour (in Korean) inside the grounds for the staggering price of about £1 each. Walking through the archways and wide courtyards, it's difficult to see how something of this antiquated beauty can exist within such a concentration of mindless traffic and concrete lassitude. While the contrast isn't as visceral as Japan, it's still a nice surprise, having only seen the one side of Seoul so far. In Korea, locals tend to stare with ...  Read the complete review

Premium Review Memories of Seoul -- Leaving The Olympics Behind (663 words)

At Kimpo International airport, everybody had a destination. The departure board flicked the flights away, new ones climbed the ladder towards boarding; my destination was Taipei. Great Britain lost to South Korea's women in the Olympic hockey, to the delight of the majority of passengers watching the screen in the departure lounge. Some of the Koreans squatted on the floor, but most of them watched standing in a semi-circle, with one eye on the flight situation. Three security guards stood with their guns slung over their shoulders; the Games had so far gone off peacefully without any threats from the North or other outside sources occurring. But ...  Read the complete review
